Data Ontologist
The Data Ontologist is responsible for designing, governing, and evolving enterprise ontologies and semantic models that enable consistent, interoperable, and high-quality data across upstream, midstream, and downstream oil & gas operations. This role bridges domain expertise and data engineering to support analytics, AI/ML, digital twins, and regulatory reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
Ontology & Semantic Modeling
- Design and maintain enterprise ontologies, taxonomies, and controlled vocabularies for oil & gas domains (e.g., wells, reservoirs, seismic, drilling, production, facilities, HSE, supply chain).
- Translate complex business concepts into formal semantic models (RDF, OWL, SKOS).
- Align ontologies with industry standards (e.g., PPDM, Energistics, ISO 15926).
Data Integration & Interoperability
- Enable semantic interoperability across data sources such as:
- SCADA, historians, and IoT platforms
- Subsurface applications (Petrel, OpenWorks, Techlog)
- Production and facilities systems
- ERP/EAM systems (SAP, Maximo)
- Support data integration initiatives using knowledge graphs and semantic layers.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement - Work closely with:
- Geoscientists, reservoir engineers, drilling engineers
- Data engineers, data scientists, and enterprise architects
- HSE, regulatory, and operations teams
- Facilitate workshops to capture domain knowledge and data definitions.
Governance & Data Quality - Define and enforce data standards, naming conventions, and metadata models.
- Support master data management (MDM) and reference data strategies.
- Ensure semantic consistency to improve data quality, lineage, and traceability.
- Advanced Analytics & AI Enablement
- Enable AI/ML, digital twins, and advanced analytics through semantic enrichment.
- Support explainable AI by providing domain-aware data context.
- Assist in building and maintaining enterprise knowledge graphs.
Required Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in:
- Information Science, Computer Science, Data Science
- Petroleum Engineering, Geoscience, or related field (with strong data focus)
Technical Skills
- Ontology languages: OWL, RDF, SKOS
- Query languages: SPARQL
- Knowledge graph platforms (e.g., Stardog, GraphDB, Neo4j, Amazon Neptune)
- Metadata & modeling tools (e.g., Protégé, ER/Studio, Collibra, Alation)
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
Domain Knowledge
- Strong understanding of at least one oil & gas domain:
- Upstream (exploration, drilling, production)
- Midstream (pipelines, logistics)
- Downstream (refining, distribution)
- Awareness of industry standards:
- PPDM
- Energistics (WITSML, PRODML, RESQML)
- ISO 15926
Preferred Qualifications

Prompt Engineer – AI & Digital Transformation (Oil & Gas)
Job Summary
We are seeking a Prompt Engineer to design, test, and optimize AI prompts that enable large language models (LLMs) and generative AI systems to support operations across the Oil & Gas value chain. This role focuses on improving AI performance for technical, operational, and business use cases such as drilling optimization, reservoir analysis, maintenance, safety, compliance, and reporting.
The ideal candidate understands both AI systems and Oil & Gas domain workflows, translating complex engineering and operational requirements into effective AI-driven solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Prompt Design & Optimization
- Design, refine, and maintain high-quality prompts for LLMs used in exploration, drilling, production, refining, and HSE applications
- Develop structured prompt templates for recurring use cases (technical reports, logs, SOPs, risk analysis)
- Continuously test and improve prompts for accuracy, consistency, and safety
Oil & Gas Use Case Enablement
- Collaborate with petroleum engineers, geoscientists, drilling teams, and HSE professionals to understand workflows
- Translate domain-specific requirements into AI prompts for:
- Drilling reports and daily logs
- Equipment maintenance insights
- Reservoir and production summaries
- Regulatory and compliance documentation
- Ensure AI outputs align with industry standards and terminology
AI Governance & Quality Control
- Implement guardrails to reduce hallucinations and unsafe outputs
- Validate AI-generated content against engineering and safety standards
- Support responsible AI use, data confidentiality, and regulatory compliance
Collaboration & Documentation
- Work closely with Data Scientists, AI Engineers, and IT teams
- Document prompt strategies, best practices, and performance metrics
- Train end users on effective AI interaction and prompt usage
Required Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Petroleum Engineering, or a related field
Experience
- 2–5 years of experience in AI, data, digital transformation, or technical roles
- Experience in the Oil & Gas industry or related heavy industry preferred
- Hands-on experience with generative AI tools and LLMs
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of Large Language Models (LLMs) and prompt engineering techniques
- Familiarity with Oil & Gas workflows (upstream, midstream, downstream)
- Ability to structure technical prompts using domain-specific language
- Basic understanding of Python, SQL, or scripting (preferred)
- Experience with AI platforms, APIs, or enterprise AI tools
Soft Skills
